Automobile accidents – even minor ones – are traumatic experiences.
And all too often, those of us in the insurance business are confronted with significant human suffering and loss. However, on occasion we encounter situations that although serious, could have been far, far worse.
The pictures above and below tell that type of story.
This single vehicle accident occurred in September when a 22-year-old student fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 90 in Montana. His SUV drifted off the road and the guardrail sliced through the vehicle, entering the right headlight, continuing on through the engine compartment, firewall, glove box, passenger seat, rear seat, and finally out through the driver’s side rear window.
And the sigh of relief? Unbelievably, no injuries.

After looking at above pictures, it could have been a different story if there was a passenger on board. Luckily, the young driver was all alone!!! Could have been so tragic regardless.

When you think of the number of students who head back to school after a brief visit or head back home from school after exams etc, and are, in many cases exhausted , you can understand why accidents like this happen. Luckily in this instance no major injuries occured or no other vehicle was involved.

Even if I weren’t physically injured, I think emotionally would be another story. This is an incredible photo. I’m glad and amazed that no one was injured.

This stresses the importance of staying alert while driving, and pulling over if you feel at all tired. This young fellow was incredibly lucky!

Wow… It’s amazing there were no injuries. Lucky he had no passenger in the front with him. Someone was looking after him.

He had to be going at a good speed to take out that much guardrail. Thank god he had no passenger.

Fatigue is one factor that causes accidents that many people overlook when driving because it can creep up on you when you least expect it. You may be very alert when you start your journey, but a long drive can easily turn into a tragedy. I take precautions when I drive long distances. I stop at rest stops and share the driving with passengers. I also try to avoid night driving whenever I can.

great photos…I can’t believe the amount of guardrail that was taken out prior to the vehicle coming to a stop. lucky the driver was not injured, and that he did not injure any other motorists on the road.

I think this incident will certainly change how this young man drives but also his whole perspective on a lot of things.

What an eye opener! And a good reminder not to get behind the wheel if you are tired.

Unbelievable! I would not be surprised if he has some sort of psychological injury… but thank goodness he was not hurt or killed.

This particular accident is alarming and confirms the importance of defensive driving. You cannot assume that other vehicles on the road are driven by responsible drivers.
